How do I clear my internet browsing history?

A.

Firefox users;
– open your Firefox browser
– press Ctrl + Shift + Del to open ‘clear recent history’ window
– select an option for the time range you wish to clear
– you may click the arrow for details and select the options to have cleared
– click the ‘clear now’ button

Google Chrome users;
– open your Chrome browser
– press Ctrl + Shift + Del to open the ‘clear browsing data’ window
– click the ‘clear browsing data’ button

Safari;
– open the gear icon, which is located near the top-right hand side of the browser window
– click the ‘reset safari’ link, which will open a new windows, uncheck any boxes which content you want to keep (every box that is checked will be deleted) finally click the ‘reset’ button

Further tips;
– if you are constantly deleting and clearing your browser history, you may want to consider using incognito or private browsing modes.
– if you cannot see the file/edit/view menu in firefox press the Alt key

Can I fix my computer running slow?

A.

There are a few ways you can increase the speed of your computer, the first step should be to reboot your computer if it has been running for a long or before you do any of the following. Another common cause of a slow computer is background programs, you should remove and disable any startup programs that you don’t utilise. Further to this, you can also install a free program called CCleaner, run this program to delete temporary and un-needed files, this will free up disk space. There are multiple other ways, however we don’t suggest doing them without experience, contact us if you don’t find these helping your computer speed.

How can I prevent data loss?

A.

To avoid data loss, the following steps may help. Firstly, regularly backup your computer further we suggest you use an anti-virus software and make sure it is regularly updated. Try to protect yourself against power surges with a UPS device. Lastly, do not over-tweak your system or play around with setting you aren’t familiar with.

What can I do to prevent viruses?

Install a trusted anti-virus program, at ABC Computer’s we suggest Norton anti-virus software. Be careful opening email attachments unless you’re expecting them or they are from trusted contacts. Keep your computer updated and use windows firewall settings.

What is phishing?

A.

Phishing is simply email scams, these may seem to come from reputable sources or companies however usually ask for personal information, contain threats if no action taken and contain links/images to promote legitimacy. Don’t release any personal information that includes passwords, credit card details, date of birth or other personal details.

My computer won’t turn on, what should I do now?

A.

If your computer doesn’t turn on as it normally would, firstly we suggest checking your power cord, make sure it’s correctly plugged into both the computer and power point, further test a separate power point to confirm it’s an issue with the computer. Secondly we want to make sure the switch for the power supply on the back of the computer is in the on position which is a dash ( – ) make sure it’s not on the off position ( o ).

A computer virus is a program that your computer can spread to other computers or networks by copying itself. Viruses usually have side affects that are very harmful to your computer, some may be as simple as irritating messages or pictures, however some can delete all your files from your computer.
